Techniques in Learning a Foreign Language

IF one is really eager to learn a foreign language for whatever purpose he or she has, then the first rationale is go to the local library and rent whatever books or materials one can find about the language. Renting a book is still favorable then going to Wikipedia over the Internet. A common Wikipedia entry is 1500 words long and one needs more than that if the person is really bent on learning a new language. But the Internet is still a resource where one can find the best materials but make these as supplemental in nature. Remember, there are not as many e-books as you can find over the Internet and some of them are even sold but renting a book in the library can cost you only a few bucks.

But I’m not saying that your research is limited to e-books only. One can certainly skim through dozens of web pages about the language that you’re acquiring. Then of course, there are free language tapes available online as exhibited by online language schools. Since these are free and are erected as promotions for the online school, one can surely stream or download them and one can already have a new perspective when it comes to acquiring listening and speaking skills of a certain second language.

Learning a foreign language is not just mind-breaking. It involves fun too. Tune in to a foreign language program on your cable television and try to discern what the narrator is saying. If you can get a few words spoken by the fluent narrator, then you are beginning to learn the language already. But the learning doesn’t stop there. Some television programs are presented with stunning visuals and one has to strain to listen to the narrator’s words to know what he or she is saying even just by peering at the visuals on the screen. But if you’re really at the beginning stage of the foreign language acquisition, then another alternative will be to view a movie in that language with subtitles of your mother tongue. A better suggestion to this is not just viewing the movie over cable TV. You may as well rent that movie so you can rewind the movie and transcribe the words of the actors and actresses on screen.

If one is trying to learn Mexican for instance, then one can easily tune in to a Mexican radio station and listen what the jock is trying to mouth. You may also buy Mexican music CDs or even download them digitally through the Internet. Don’t just appreciate the instrumental music, listen closely to the lyric and attempt to transcribe them yourself without being tempted to open up its lyric on any website. Or you may buy Mexican language tapes which are commonly available in even small retail outlets. When you listen to a foreign language tape, try to use earphones so the voice of the narrator will be modulated and crisp and you can easily understand what he or she is saying.
